Poppet valve and spring

Unique intake "poppet valve" and spring used on Oliver's 35hp Olympus and subsequent similar Perkins motors.   Developed and patented by George Martin of Martin Outboard Motors fame and successfully utilized in all their motors.  Valve replaced the "reed" valve assembly found in virtually all 2 cycle engines (even today) and was driven by cam follower controlled by a cam ground onto the crankshaft.  Each cylinder had its own valve, spring, cam and follower.  The arrangement was said to promote smooth operation throughout the rpm range.

Although the arrangement is not clear, George Martin sold manufacturing rights for the valve to Oliver when he left Martin Motors after a parting of the ways with the parent company of Martin Motors.

Paul's Email comments attached to this image:

"These are Martin poppet valves and a Martin cam follower. The top valve type is definitely a George Martin design which has an all aluminum valve seat and its design was sold to Oliver.  The second valve design was engineered by other Martin staff, very possibly after George left
National Pressure Cooker.  Hooray for good old Slick George!    Paul

P.S.  The newer design has a rubber O ring seat which is the black ring at the base of the valve head.  This is a replaceable part and does an overall better job than the original design.       Over and out."
